Selections

Let us assume you are in attendence at a song service being held at our church. Let us also assume I am in charge of the service and I am taking selections from the congregation. What selection would you want sung and why? What is your favorite hymn and why is it your favorite?

Afraid I am not familar with the song book. The title does sound familar though. We use the Church Hymnal and LIfe Songs. I believe I like the Mennonite Hymnal the best but we do not have it in our church. There is another hymnal we have Christian Hymnal which I do not like and rarely use.....

I am familiar with it but not so keen on that one either......

My #1 selection in Church Hymnal is "My Jesus as Thou Wilt". It was 40 some years ago that I made this my life's song, and I keep coming back to it in my devotional times. Surrender to the will of God is the number one goal in my life, and the name of Jesus my brother in the song touches my humanity. The music from a symphony carries it so well. I like your posts.JH

I do not care for the style of the songs that are used in Zion's Praises, Christian Hymnary, or Christian HYmnal. I realize this is a personal taste issue and I do not have a problem with the songs/lyrics it is a style thing. I don't care to much for gospel style songs.

Thanks J. Herr for your kind words concerning my random thoughts and ideas. I like the song as well. It is hard to understand or surrender to God's will.....

One other thought on surrendering, it is always worth it and you wonder why you didn't do it earlier.....

A couple of my favorites would be "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross", because the words are beautiful and help put my life into perspective, and the tune is really pretty and goes with the song; "Take My Life and Let It Be" because that's my heart's prayer; "Have Thine Own Way" is also a "life song"; "Father, Whate'er of Earthly Bliss", which has a beautiful tune and "life song" words. Then there's.........Just kidding! I won't bore you with more. =D I really like our Church Hymnal and Life Songs. I wasn't really impressed with Zion's Praises, though.

There are so many hymns that I could pick as a favorite. One that stands out to me is "The Church's One Foundation" another would be "Abide With Me".
By the way Glen, when we were at your church one Sunday morning, you lead a song out of one of your song books that really blew me away. I had never heard it before and often wished I would have wrote it down. Maybe you could list several and I might be able to recognize it. As I recall, it wasn't a long song and the tempo was rather soft or reverent.

Wow, Rob, you will need to refresh my memory. When were you here and what was the song about? What was the service about? I am trying to remember when you were here last.

I am not sure I have seen the Brethern Hymnal, I could get one fairly easily, I think. I enjoy hymnals in general......

Ah, yes minors, I love minors. They are so dark sounding and usually are true to life.....
Or they talk about the greatness and infinity of God. Great God How Infinite would be an example of this song. Most spirituals are minors and I think spirituals would be my most favorite songs.....

If on a Quiet Sea, How Great Thou Art, The Old Rugged Cross, When Peace Like a River, one we practiced for chorus Bread of the World and probably at least that many more.

Minors are great, aren't they?!! I especially loved VOP'd arrangement of "Great God, How Infinite Thou Art"!! Especially the last verse - it makes the words come alive.
