Football

College and Professional football is rapidly approaching and if I am not mistaken local high school's began there season last night. I do think the college game is more interesting however, I enjoy the NFL also. Some people tend to be very supportive of a certain college or city's team. I must confess that I fall into this category. Unfortunately It has been proven over the last 15 years that I have a very poor track record and would make a general manager. Also there are a few teams that I absolutely cannot stand and I am always hopeful these teams lose every game they play. The most obvious school is, of all things, a cow school whose campus is located in Blacksburg. The Hokies. What is a Hokie? Why is there mascot a turkey? Wait, I digress. The main reason I have developed such a poor view of this university's football program is really quite simple. They are rivals. I have been true to the Cavaliers UVa.) since I was a teenager, none of this bandwagon fan mess for me. The other team is actually a baseball team. Da Yankees. Oh I can't stand the Yankees. They buy everything they want plus the kitchen sink. So I hope they do not make the playoffs. But I am sure they will the Yankees always do.
So back to the Hokie Pokies who thinks they will not make it to a BCS bowl game? I hope they don't but, like the Yankees, they probably will just to spite me..

Glen, my friend, (sigh). I agree on the one but not the other. Go cows and turkeys!

Well I happen to agree with you on both teams Glen.

Needless to say that makes things around here get interesting around football season. (with Lowell liking the Hokies)

Anyway GO CAVS.

I personally think it is kinda stupid and immature to hear the passion with which people can discuss teams that they support for no particular reason. While I'm on a roll i might as well say that I think it also is a shame how much time and brain activity goes into memorizing different players stats, etc when it could go into much better things like tomorrows sunday school lesson. I hope I am not making any offense to anyone, but that one has been waiting to vent for a while. Also, don't get me wrong, I also enjoy sports. I just wonder sometimes how consistant it is with a christians life to become to entangled in the sports world. I don't always appreciate hearing the reverence with which our young lads refer to their heros who off the playing arena are very immoral and ungodly people. Well, I think that is enough steam blown off for a while. Thanks for the platform to steam off of.

Sounds good, But is sports any different then any thing that we put our time and energy into. What about the time spent in reading this very blog. Everyone has things they do for entertainment. Whether it is music, hunting, fishing, you name it.

My sentiments exactly Glen. People sometimes try to hassle me about the amount of time I spend on the computer. I admit that I probably need to work on that a bit. I am not sure why people who spend hours with their nose in a book don't get the same amount of rebuke. I just don't see much of a difference.

I completely agree that different activites shouldn't be judged by different standards. I guess what bugs me is when such a big deal is made over who cheers for who when almost everyone involved has no vested interest in the team they cheer for. I do think that we all tend to put our particular activity into a different catagory than everybody elses. With that in mind I will make my argument. I see my interest in hunting and fishing, etc, as time that I can spend alone quietly, some of which I use praying or reading verses which I view as a better use of time than reading a magazine.

Most of the hunters I know, don't do it so they can memorize scripture. But that's a nice ideal.

I think it gets a little dicey when personalities and preferences are used as the gauge for what is an "approved" or "disapproved" hobby. If you're an introvert and prefer time alone, naturally you may find your hobbies are those that are solitary. Some extroverts enjoy being with others for their hobbies, and thus enjoy some noise/people (such as a game). I find that Mennonites in general seem to see some hobbies as "more kosher," one being hunting. Case in point: spending $1000 on a rifle/travel/license/etc./etc. is ok, because you'll eat the meat (actually heard that one). Processing costs alone defy the purpose of hunting. Hamburger is way cheaper. This from a woman who is thankful her husband's hobbies aren't in the woods and streams.

And from a "stupid and immature" attitude, GO IRISH! Oh yeah, and the Steelers. :o)

BTW, anonymous, it would lend weight to your position if you would sign your posts, methinks.

I enjoy the peace and quiet that the woods and fields have to offer. It is a great time to ponder life, and the many things one must do.

Being in high school i don't have but so much money to spend on hunting. Buying a gun is only necessary once or twice in ones life, and if your careful you do not have to come anywhere near $1000 dollars. The other thing is that a person can process meat himself for a lot less than it costs to get it done commercially.
In all reality hunting is a poor sport to harp on (i think) because of its many positive aspects. People, (Mennonites) spend a lot more time and money on other hobbies than i do hunting. Also if no one hunted deer. They would soon overrun us. Deer carry diseases and need to be kept thinned down.

Well Eldon, I don't think we should harp any persons hobbie unless it is leading them from the most important things in life. There are people out there that don't have that balance at the right place. Where is that balance?

sports are great...and the yankees rule...anonymous posters are jerks for the most part...(i know it seems strong but put down your name or shut up)...(also go study your sunday school lesson--hopefully it isn't about running the perfect race)

Glen is right with the balance thing. You can go overboard on boating (pun not intended!), fishing, hunting, playing team sports, computers (that one's for me too, Rob! But at least we're at home....!); actually any activity. Take a hard look at the sacrifices you're making to do what you want/like to do...

Anon makes a few good points, esp. this:
"I don't always appreciate hearing the reverence with which our young lads refer to their heros who off the playing arena are very immoral and ungodly people." (emphasis added)
I agree. For Josh and Val, I understand what you mean about anon. postings, but it isn't wise to discredit a message because you don't know the messenger... or the messenger doesn't have everything "straight" in his life.

Here is my defense to the memorizing stats thing... (Maybe the fact I had to defend it means it's a problem for me......?!)I get the USA Today newspaper and I skim it from cover to cover... For instance, I know there were some acting awards given out over the weekend and P.Diddy was the host of the show. I don't even know if P.Diddy is an actor or a singer, and frankly I don't care who won what. But I read it and it stuck... a lot of what I read sticks (a blessing and a curse). I also know that the San Diego Padres are leading the National League West Division with a .496 winning percentage. Who cares about the Padres.... now the Braves.... that's different!!

And since the original post was about football, I need to say this. I played a little football in school, and enjoyed it. I'm built for it (don't ask)... But somehow it's a different sport than the other "true American sports"... In baseball, the object of focus is the ball. Hit it as hard as you can. Catch it however you can. And you don't throw the ball at a opposing player. In basketball the object is to put the ball in the hoop. Yea, you can push and shove a little, but normally the focus is the ball. In football, the focus isn't really the ball. It's the ball carrier. Tackle him, trip him, attack him, pound him into the ground. That's what you do when you're good (on defense). There is a focus of attacking the other team's player, and somehow that made a difference for me.

And my "stupid, immature attitude": Go Braves! Go anybody who plays the Yankees!! (esp. Boston!)
